Phalacrocorax chalconotus, Stuart cormorant - a species of bird from the cormorant family

The name speaks for itself: it is the smallest representative of its kind. The cormorant is an almost endangered species, especially in the territory of the CIS countries. Hunters are not particularly interested in shooting a bird, most often the main reason for their extinction is poor environmental conditions and falling into fishermen's nets, as well as fires.

Bird appearance

It is easy to distinguish the cormorant from its congeners by the color of the bird. The color of the plumage of individuals changes depending on the phase of the bird's life:

  • chicks - brown fluff with a brown tint,
  • bird feathers during nesting have two shades: off-white and light brown,
  • the first "mating outfit" of individuals in brown-brown tones with a green sheen,
  • the second "mating outfit" has a dark brown color below and brightens closer to the head, teardrop-shaped white feathers appear,
  • "After marriage dress" - dark brown with a faint metallic tinge.

The body size is small - about 60 cm, weight - up to a kilogram.

Where does the cormorant live

Despite the fact that the cormorant has wings, the bird is best oriented on the water. Therefore, most often individuals are found in large and small reservoirs, in which there is running water. There is no difference whether the water is salty or fresh: the cormorant is able to live both in the seas and in rivers. To feel as comfortable as possible, the bird chooses banks with large thickets of bushes, reeds or reeds. An ideal place to create a nest is a floating island in a river arm with lots of vegetation and clear water.

What does it eat?

The most delicious treat for a cormorant is fish. However, due to the small size of the beak, the bird cannot swallow large prey. The maximum size is 10-12 cm. Usually cormorants eat carp, pike, roach and rudd. However, if there is no fish, the bird can eat small mollusks such as shrimp or amphibians: frogs, lizards, snakes and snakes.

The cormorant can live its entire life in one body of water, if the amount of food is sufficient. If the amount of potential prey is less, the bird will move to another place.

Interesting Facts

Small cormorants are an interesting species of birds, their lifestyle is different from others:

  1. Individuals are not aggressive and enter into a "fight" only to protect themselves from predators.
  2. Cormorant droppings are high in nitrogen and phosphate, making them an effective fertilizer.
  3. Cormorant can destroy spawning to feed chicks.
